Partnership wins Collins AwardThu, Jun 17 2010 ![]() Sustainable Florida, a program operated by the Collins Center for Public Policy, recently awarded St. Johns Housing Partnership the Best Practice Award. Although a record 109 entries were received this year vying for the Collins Center Sustainable Florida 2010 Best Practice Awards, St. Johns Housing Partnership managed to garner one of the seven top spots. The award was announced recently at the Sustainable Florida Awards banquet in St. Petersburg. SJHP, whose mission is to provide safe, decent and affordable housing, added value to its efforts by introducing energy and water conservation measures. Applying in the green building category, SJHP demonstrated its success in developing The Hancock Place into a sustainable community and illustrated how workforce housing can be affordable and green-certified. The Hancock Place consists of 36 eco-friendly homes for first-time home buyers. Located near the heart of historic St. Augustine, the award-winning subdivision provides down payment assistance to qualified home buyers, low-maintenance features and quality construction at an affordable price. Winner of the 2007 Florida Yards and Neighborhood Community Wide Landscaping award for drought tolerant/ Florida friendly landscape design and most recently the 2008 EPA Regional Award for Energy Efficiency. Constructed by World Island Builders, these 3BR/2BA homes are both Energy Star and Water Star homes. All the current homes in Hancock Place also meet the Green Building Certification. Sustainable Florida, a program run by the Collins Center for Public Policy, honors business, organizations and individuals whose work demonstrates that a healthy environment and a healthy economy are mutually supportive. This is the 12th year the Best Practice Award winners have been recognized by a panel of leaders in government, business and academic institutions and civic and environmental organizations. The panel evaluated the nominees based on outcomes achieved, the ability to duplicate the effort and the overall success of the initiative. Bill Lazar, executive director of SJHP, said he was honored by the recognition. “Hancock Place is a great example of what can be accomplished by working with community partners toward the common goal of affordable, sustainable and green housing.”
