SJHP Focuses on Numerous Benefits of Weatherization
ST. AUGUSTINE – October 30 is National Weatherization Day.
The non-profit St. Johns Housing Partnership (SJHP) Weatherization Assistance Program provides no cost energy-efficiency improvements to qualified homeowners in St. Johns and Clay Counties.
Weatherization is a comprehensive set of measures aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of a residence. The repairs are part of an increased focus on building performance that reduces energy consumption and improves indoor air quality.
“The goal is to reduce the monthly energy burden on low-income households by improving the energy efficiency of the home. There can be significant outcomes in household savings, reduced energy usage, and lower bills reduced asthma and allergies, reduced moisture, fewer missed days from school or work, less out-of-pocket medical costs, and improved indoor air quality,” noted SJHP Executive Director Bill Lazar.
This process conducted by SJHP involves identifying and sealing air leaks, improving insulation, and improving various components of a home’s building envelope.
Why Weatherize?
Health: Documented studies have shown some improvement in occupant health or indoor environmental conditions. Some studies also observed reductions in asthma or respiratory related emergency department or hospital visits.
Energy Savings: Weatherization can lead to substantial reductions in energy consumption. A home remains warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing the need for excessive heating and cooling.
Lower Utility Bills: Reduced energy consumption directly translates into lower utility bills. Over time, the cost savings can be substantial, making weatherization a wise and cost-effective investment.
Environmental Benefits: Using less energy not only saves money but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Home weatherization reduces the carbon footprint, helping to mitigate climate change and promote a greener lifestyle.
Finally, a weatherized homes can provide better year-round comfort. Residents experience fewer drafts, more consistent indoor temperatures, and improved humidity control, making their living spaces more pleasant and accommodating.
Not taking advantage of the SJHP Weatherization Assistance Program is a missed opportunity for low-income residents, who spend more of their income on energy and whose health is more likely to be affected by asthma, cold, and heat.
